トーマス・デマンドの作品を鑑賞した後、東京都現代美術館の常設展にも足を運んでみました。
スゥ・ドーホーの『Reflection』という作品がまず目に飛び込んできます。
淡いブルーの薄いナイロン生地で作られた東洋的な門が、
遥か頭上に天井のように張られた布地を境に
上下にミラーのように制作されています。

新作『Reflection／リフレクション』では作家の生家の門が、テーマとして取り上げられています。
家のシリーズと同様、作家にとっては非常に個人的なモチーフではありますが、
ここで「門」はより象徴的な意味を語りかけているようです。
門は家の外構えや通過地点に設けられた出入口であり、またそれは境界線のように
ある場所とある場所を分断しつつ、出入りをコントロールする地点でもあります。
しかし門の向こう側は、常に外側ではなく、反対側から見れば内側となる、表裏一体の現象であるかもしれません。

Founded by partners Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin, Lehmann Maupin first opened in SoHo, and moved, in September 2002, to its present location in Chelsea. A second New York gallery space opened in late 2007 at 201 Chrystie Street in Manhattan's new cultural hub, the Bowery area.
